Dismantling Staudenhof

Demolition/Dismantling/Contaminant Remediation

Reinwald GmbH has been awarded the contract for the remediation of pollutants, gutting, dismantling and disposal services as a total demolition down to the foundation depth of the structures, which also includes the surface paving (roads, paths, squares), canals, shafts, underground cables and power lines.

The “Staudenhof” building was constructed in the 1970s and is located at Am Alten Markt 10 / Am Kanal 48/49, in the northern inner city district of Potsdam.

The property has an area of approximately 9,000 m² and is in the immediate vicinity of the listed St. Nicholas Church (to the south) and the listed main post office building (to the north).

The demolition work is taking place in the confined inner-city space. Due to this, five floors will initially be dismantled using cranes. The remaining building will then be dismantled, crushed, and removed using large-scale machinery such as long-front excavators.

Client: BASF Schwarzheide GmbH
Location: BASF Chemical Plant in Schwarzheide
Construction Period: 12 months

Scope of services:

Reinwald GmbH has been contracted for the dismantling of the TDI and TDA plants as a total demolition down to the foundation depth of the structures. This also includes the removal of surface reinforcements (roads, pathways, and squares), channels, shafts, underground cables, and power lines.

The TDI and TDA plants were previously used for the production of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) via the precursor stages dinitrotoluene (DNT) and toluene diamine (TDA), utilizing carbon monoxide and chlorine gases—both essential in the production of plastics (polyurethanes).

The dismantling work is carried out partially under confined space conditions, in areas adjacent to operational facilities and pipe bridges, with strict adherence to occupational safety regulations and protection of the remaining installations.

The plants are being dismantled using both crane-assisted deconstruction and heavy machinery, such as:

  • Volvo EC 480 tracked excavator with a 30 m high-reach boom

  • Hitachi ZX 870 XXL with a 50 m high-reach boom

Technical Data:

Dismantling / Deconstruction of the following facilities:

  • Phosgene plant

  • HCl absorption unit

  • TDI Plant 1 containment

  • TDI Plant 2

  • TDI interim storage

  • Chlorine evaporation unit

  • Chlorine storage

  • Chlorine destruction facility

  • TDA plant

  • TDA storage

  • DNT storage

  • Raw material storage

Structural Components of the Plants:

The facilities mainly consist of:

  • Steel structures on individual foundations, tank storage, and wastewater collection pits

  • Apparatus structures as steel constructions on individual foundations

  • Reinforced concrete buildings with integrated steel apparatus structures

  • Production frameworks on slab foundations

  • Massive buildings with tank storage in reinforced concrete basins

The facilities to be dismantled are decontaminated, stripped, and dismantled in compliance with TRGS regulations or mechanically demolished. All waste materials are professionally disposed of or recycled.

Key Figures:

  • Dismantling / Deconstruction of steel structures: approx. 2,000 t

  • Dismantling / Deconstruction of process equipment scrap: approx. 1,000 t

  • Demolition of buildings: approx. 20,000 m³ building volume

  • Deep debris removal: approx. 10,000 m³
